Sins Of Shadows started as a studio project before evolving into the powerhouse trio they are today. After building a foundation with EPs like "Sins Of Shadows" and "Today's The Day", they brought bassist Sebastien Normand on board to record their debut full-length, "The Master's Way". They kept the momentum going by recruiting drummer Rodolphe Plachesi for their second outing, "Imperium", which showed off a more complex side of their songwriting. Since then, the French crew has been dropping singles and collaborating with big names, sharpening their blade for this new chapter.
France isn't exactly the first place you think of for old-school steel, but Sins Of Shadows is changing that narrative fast. "The Last Frontier" is a heavy, melodic beast that kicks the door down. Bringing Tasos Lazaris in on vocals was a killer move; his pipes have that classic range that elevates the whole experience. The riffs are front and center, trading blows with a rhythm section that sounds like it wants to break your ribs. It’s got that pure, unfiltered energy of a band that finally found their true North and decided to floor the accelerator.
You can tell Nicolas Jacon has been worshipping at the altar of the greats because those twin-guitar harmonies are pure magic. It’s got the galloping spirit of the British legends mixed with the technical muscle of the American thrash scene. "The Void" and "The Last Frontier" show a band that isn’t interested in wasting your time. The tracks fire off with real intensity, and the melodies stick in your brain like a hook. The production is spot-on too, it sounds big and mean without losing that organic, basement-born spirit that makes heavy metal actually worth listening to.
The songwriting on this record is a major step up. They’ve managed to take the progressive layers from their earlier stuff and condense them into something far more explosive. Tracks like "Walls Of Past" and "As Darkness Falls" have these soaring choruses that make you want to throw your fist through the ceiling. It’s melodic, sure, but it never loses that aggressive edge that keeps it from sounding like radio-friendly fluff. There’s a certain fire here that was missing in their more experimental days, and it suits them perfectly.
If you live for the sounds of the NWOBHM but want something that sounds like it was recorded this decade, this is your ticket. Sins Of Shadows have delivered a record that honors the gods of metal while carving out their own patch of dirt. It’s an honest, high-octane trip through the best parts of the genre. "The Last Frontier" is easily their best work, and it’s going to be a nightmare for any other melodic metal band to top this year. This is metal for the die-hards, plain and simple.
