Hailing from the rain-slicked streets of Glasgow, The Cosmic Dead has spent over fifteen years evolving into a terrifying mass of psychedelic energy. Known for being a total sonic assault, this Scottish collective has cycled through various lineups since 2010, eventually settling into their current form as a quartet of space-obsessed explorers. They specialize in long-form compositions that push the boundaries of volume and repetition, earning a reputation for being one of the most intense live acts in the underground scene. With their tenth album, they continue their mission to launch listeners into a void where the only constant is the heavy vibration of the cosmos.

"Beyond The Beyond" is a heavy, tripped-out voyage that demands you surrender your brain to the frequency. The Scottish quartet brings a wall of sound that hits like a freight train made of stardust. There’s relentless energy, driven by a rhythm section that locks into a groove and refuses to let up. It’s the kind of music that makes you feel like your skull is vibrating at a different speed than the rest of your body, fueled by a heavy dose of wah-pedals on absolutely everything.

The addition of the fiddle is a total curveball that actually works. Instead of some folk nonsense, Calum Calderwood uses the instrument to create soaring, screeching lines that slice through the synthesizer fog. Luigi Pasquini’s electronics add a layer of weirdness, filling the air with bleeps that sound like a malfunctioning spaceship. It’s a solid mix, handled at Dystopia Recording Studio, and it retains all the heat of a band playing in a room together. The production is thick and immersive, capturing the raw power of their setup without losing the nuances of the synth textures.

"Furthur" starts the party with sixteen minutes of pure momentum, while "Aurora" and "Aether" stretch out into even more distant territories. There’s certain arrogance in making songs this long, but The Cosmic Dead has the chops to back it up. They don't mess around with flashy solos; instead, they build a mountain of sound and then jump off the top. It’s a hypnotic experience that keeps the pressure on, making the shorter "Stronger" feel like a brief moment to catch your breath before the next deep-space immersion.

This isn't a perfect record, as the sheer length of the tracks might test the patience of anyone who isn't already a fan of the genre. However, for those of us who live for the drone and the fuzz, it’s a high-quality addition to their massive discography. The Cosmic Dead remains the masters of this specific brand of interdimensional noise. If you want to melt into your sofa while your ears ring with the sound of the rings of Saturn, this is the one to get. It’s loud, it’s weird, and it’s exactly what space rock should be.
