Thunder Rising originally sprouted back in 2012 when old friends Frank Caruso and Corrado "Nail" Ciceri reconnected after twenty years apart. The duo had previously founded the '80s metal outfit Firehouse, releasing two albums across Europe and sharing a mutual admiration for legendary vocalist Mark Boals during his stint with Y.J. Malmsteen. Following their separation, Frank Caruso spent his time founding the prog metal unit Arachnes, delivering eight albums, alongside releasing two records with Strings24. Meanwhile, drummer Corrado "Nail" Ciceri spent fifteen years with Wine Spirit, hitting major stages like Gods Of Metal and sharing bills with Glenn Hughes and Alvin Lee. Bringing in vocalist Alessio Spini, who possessed extensive live experience ranging from massive theatrical productions to Led Zeppelin tributes, along with bassist Gabriele Baroni and keyboardist Enzo Caruso, the band united their extensive collective backgrounds to forge a heavy rock machine rooted in classic traditions.
When you assemble a line-up of seasoned veterans who cut their teeth in the glorious decades of heavy music, you expect a certain level of execution, and "Horizon Line" provides just that. The songs build on a foundation of classic songwriting, deploying roaring Marshall amplification, genuine Fender Stratocaster tones, and roaring Hammond organ flourishes that pay homage to the gods of the late '70s and '80s. Riffs channeling the spirit of Deep Purple and Rainbow are intertwined with melodic hooks reminiscent of Journey or Boston, presenting a balanced mixture of traditional aggression and melodic accessibility. The production merges vintage equipment with modern studio techniques, creating an output that sounds incredibly transparent and powerful without losing its traditional spirit.
Vocal melodies drive the hooks home across anthems like "Can't Forget Your Voice" and "Live Forever," while the rhythm section keeps the pace steady, anchoring the driving tempos of "Born To Ride" and "Mad Machine." The guitar execution provides fiery leads that mesh with the symphonic layering of the keyboards, guiding the listener through an expansive sonic journey. "She Can't Hold You Back" and "The Prisoner" display traditional arrangements where every gear shifts smoothly, culminating in the melodic resolutions found in "Dreaming Song To You" and "Dangerous Speed." It is a well-crafted ride for anyone who worships the golden age of hard rock and heavy metal.
