Thy Sanatorium is an American extreme metal outfit featuring Ra on vocals, Aries on guitars, and Crux on vocals, alongside session musicians. The band tracks its music at The Sanatorium Studio, with Aries managing the mixing and production duties, while Colin Davis handles the mastering process at Imperial Mastering.
"Thy Sanatorium" is a strong first step into the metal underground, merging the symphonic elements of Dimmu Borgir and Cradle Of Filth with the dark melodies of Paradise Lost and the melodic death metal framework reminiscent of Children Of Bodom. This self-titled debut strikes a fine balance between extremity and melody. The arrangements are crafted with attention to rhythm, ensuring the material remains engaging throughout the running time. It is a cohesive musical journey across eight tracks, where a dark atmosphere takes the lead.
The performance from the core trio is precise. The vocal trade-offs provide excellent contrast, shifting between styles that complement the underlying music perfectly. Aries provides excellent guitar work, anchoring the horror elements with a dark edge. Songs like "Torment," "I Monster," and "No Flag Left to Burn" display excellent structural balance, where the melodic leads match the intensity of the rhythm section. The production allows the arrangements to sound clear, giving the symphonic layers enough presence without burying the aggression.
While the tracking is orderly, a few moments across the eight tracks follow a predictable structure. "Feed the Mirror" and "Remnant" are highly effective, but they tread very familiar stylistic territory for the genre. The title track, "Thy Sanatorium," closes the album on a high note, wrapping up the experience effectively. This debut is a well-crafted addition to the gothic extreme metal landscape, presenting a clear sonic identity that leaves a very good impression.
