Genre Avant Blackened Death Metal
Origin Ukraine
Formed in Kyiv, Ukraine, the band Damnation Aeon was created by Lucifer, bassist of Balance Interruption and Goat Sperm, together with drummer Dmytro Kim of Balance Interruption, former Jinjer member, and live member of Patriarkh. What began as their own project took shape through a sound rooted in avant-garde blackened death metal, with a progressive compositional approach and a strong focus on atmosphere, structure, and tension. Following the digital EP “Abandon Hope”, released in 2024, Damnation Aeon now presents its first full-length work. The album deals with the destructive consequences of faith, especially Christian faith, on the individual and on humanity as a whole. Its lyrics take a confrontational view of religion, God, and human nature, framing the record as a dark and deliberate statement rather than a purely abstract exercise in extremity. Across seven tracks, “In Flame We Trust” moves between aggression, unease, and layered arrangements, with saxophone and additional vocals adding further depth to the band’s core sound.
Ukrainian underground veterans Damnation Aeon bring a dark, calculated strike with their debut full-length record “In Flame We Trust”. Emerging from the ashes of the digital EP “Abandon Hope”, this album
targets the destructive impact of religious faith on humanity. The approach leans heavily into avant-garde blackened death metal, mixing calculated aggression with structured arrangements.
The songwriting relies on a progressive blueprint, building tension across seven distinct compositions. Tracks like “Vagaries Of Perception”, “Exaltation”, and “Feast Of Worms” display a methodical approach to extremity. The attack is calculated, utilizing unexpected layers like saxophone and diverse vocal arrangements to add depth to the traditional metal instrumentation. Songs like “Slave”, “Bates Of Sheol”, and “For The Dead, The Living And The Uborn” maintain this grim atmosphere, leading into the final title track “In Flame We Trust”. The production is clear, mixed and mastered by the drummer, ensuring that every element of the confrontational performance is heard. It is a well-crafted, dark metal release that offers a strong, atmospheric experience.
Performance-wise, the musicians deliver what this style requires. Lucifer’s vocals spit venom with enough variation to avoid becoming flat, while Kim’s drumming pushes the material forward with intensity and precision. The production suits the album well too. It sounds raw enough for the blackened edge to remain intact, while still allowing the strange arrangements and layered details to come through clearly.
“In Flame We Trust” may not reach the heights of the genre’s elite names, though it easily proves that Damnation Aeon has serious potential and a clear artistic direction. The album succeeds through atmosphere, aggression and unconventional songwriting choices that give it identity beyond standard blackened death metal formulas. For a debut full-length, this is a very respectable step forward from the Ukrainian act.
