Yeti On Horseback is a doom metal band from London, Ontario, formed in 2012. The band released its debut full length, "The Great Dying", in 2016, followed by the "Nothing" EP in 2020 and now returns with its second full length, "Traditional Addictions". The line up consists of S.M. on bass and vocals, E.T. on drums, S.S. on vocals and soundscapes, R.P. on vocals and guitar, and M.S. on lead guitar.
Their approach sits deep in doom metal, with sludge and stoner influences shaping the guitar work, while the vocal arrangements add a grim, unsettling layer to the music. The band's material has dealt with bleak human subjects from the beginning, and "Traditional Addictions" continues that direction through themes involving addiction, trauma, abuse, religion and destructive cycles.
"Traditional Addictions" is a long form doom metal release where the guitars spend considerable time grinding through slow riffs, distorted textures and psychedelic passages. The production was handled by Greg Dawson at BWC Studios in Kingston, Ontario, with recording, mixing and mastering also completed there. The vocal setup is particularly important, with several voices appearing across the album and soundscapes adding another layer around the main arrangements.
Lyrically, the material goes into drug dependence, death, physical suffering and religious abuse, giving the record a bleak subject matter that is difficult to separate from the music itself. "Drug Addict" presents addiction in blunt terms, "Mariner's Lament" shifts toward death and burial imagery, while "Through With This Flesh" deals with blood, suffering and religious references. "Erotic Goth Dad" turns toward spiritual terrorism and sexual abuse within the Catholic Church, making the closing section particularly provocative.
At times the pacing can become heavy going, and the album asks for considerable time before its ideas fully develop. Still, the combination of doom, sludge, stoner elements, layered vocals and bleak subject matter gives "Traditional Addictions" a distinct underground character. It is a dark, extended listen that stays committed to its grim subject matter and slow musical language throughout.
