The Spectre Beneath formed in 2018 around guitarist Pete Worrall and Katy Lennon, developing material with a strong melodic and cinematic direction. The band released "The Downfall Of Judith King" in 2019 and "The New Identity Of Sidney Stone" in 2020, with the latter later receiving a reissue through WormHoleDeath Records. Vocalist L.L, drummer Consta Taylor and additional musicians have contributed to the band’s changing lineup over the years, with Nicole Garza handling vocals on 2023’s "The Ashen Child".
The current lineup features L.L on vocals, Pete Worrall on guitar, bass and backing vocals, Consta Taylor on drums and Katy Lennon on additional vocals. Guest musicians include Vini Assis, Alex Gusinsky, Jimmy Konsta, Vicente Ferreira and Martin Worrall, adding guitars, drums, piano and strings across selected material. The Spectre Beneath draws from power metal, progressive metal and classic heavy metal influences, with Megadeth, Savatage, Queensrÿche and Iron Maiden among the names connected to its musical direction.
"The Devil’s Whisper" develops a cinematic power/progressive metal sound through layered guitar work, melodic vocals and arrangements that move between traditional heavy metal structures and more progressive passages. Pete Worrall handles the music, with vocal melodies written by Worrall and Katy Lennon, additional vocal lines from L.L. The album also uses material connected to Hammer Horror, with "Sister Hyde" drawing on the 1971 film, while "White Tulip" introduces a more melancholic side to the overall atmosphere.
Production was handled by the band, with recording at Baron Studios in England and drums recorded at Core Inside Studio in Greece. Juho Kilponen handled mixing and mastering, giving the album a modern presentation that retains the melodic and theatrical qualities of the songwriting. The vocal approach is expressive and dramatic, while the guitars move through melodic leads, harmonized sections and progressive arrangements. At times the amount of detail asks for patience, especially when the compositions become more elaborate, and some ideas could have benefited from greater restraint.
The songwriting has enough substance to support the album’s cinematic direction, with the narrative themes integrated into the musical structure instead of being treated as decoration. "The Devil’s Whisper" is an ambitious power/progressive metal release with a distinctly British heavy metal foundation, elaborate arrangements and a strong emphasis on storytelling. It offers plenty of detail across its songs, though its expansive approach will appeal more to listeners who prefer theatrical and progressive songwriting over immediate simplicity.
