Vulgar Mephitis is a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania based brutal death metal band formed around vocalist Jacob Toy and bassist Jay Schweinberg, with guitarist Dan Martin and drummer Nick Bentzel completing the current lineup. The band first appeared with their self titled three track EP in 2022, presenting a more linear form of brutal death metal. The addition of Martin and Bentzel changed the songwriting process, leading to a more varied approach on their debut full length, "From Dust". The album also marks their first release through Willowtip Records, placing the band within a label roster strongly associated with extreme metal.
"From Dust" runs for a little over twenty six minutes and packs eight tracks into a compact attack built on violent tempo shifts, dissonant guitar work and abrupt structural changes. The production by Sasha Borovykh at Tsun Tsun Productions keeps the sound aggressive and defined, while drums recorded by Shane Mayer at Cerebral Audio give the rhythmic side a firm presence. The songs move through bursts of fast brutal death metal, sudden rhythmic changes and angular riffing, with Jacob Toy's vocals sitting deep inside the attack. "Martyr", "Exterminating Profane", "Scorn Of My Flesh" and "Gorging Greed" represent the record's central approach, where short sections collide with longer arrangements such as "Wounds". The songwriting has more variation than the band's earlier material, making the record less predictable from one track to another. There is little interest in excess decoration here, the focus stays on riffs, tempo changes and vocal aggression. "From Dust" is a compact debut that gives Vulgar Mephitis a firm place within the current brutal death metal underground.
