Gods & Punks are a Brazilian heavy psych band formed by Alexandre C. on vocals, Pedro C. on bass, Rodrigo B. on guitars and Gabriel S. on drums. Based in Brazil and active in the heavy underground, the band has reached its sixth studio album with "A Shrine By The Sea", continuing its combination of doom metal, psychedelic rock and progressive structures. Their music has a strong connection to long compositions, heavy riffing and extended atmospheric sections, with the four musicians working around a format that allows each side of the vinyl edition to function as one extended composition.
"A Shrine By The Sea" contains two tracks, "The Lighthouse" and "Poseidon", each running for just over twenty one minutes. The record moves through crushing doom riffs, psychedelic textures and progressive changes, creating a long form listening experience with a distinctly heavy psychedelic character. Alexandre C. handles the lyrics, while the recording took place across Rio de Janeiro, Santos and Paris, with mixing and mastering completed by André Leal and Kleber Mariano at Estúdio Jukebox.
The production gives the guitars, bass, drums and vocals a balanced presence, allowing the extended arrangements to develop at their own pace. The first composition leans into hypnotic repetition and spacious psychedelic sections, while the second follows a similarly expansive route with heavier riff work and gradual shifts. "A Shrine By The Sea" asks for patience due to its long format, yet the musical ideas remain focused enough to support the duration. It is a substantial doom metal release with a strong psychedelic edge and a distinctly underground approach.
