Old Ruins was formed in 2019 in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, initially as a studio project by drummer Alexander Czernik and vocalist/guitarist Christian Krajewski. The project soon expanded into a full band, with Oliver Krajewski on bass and Ersin Kara on guitar. Their first release was the self-titled EP in 2020, followed by the full-length "Always Heading East" in 2023 through Doc Gator Records. "Mount Arreat" is their second full-length, continuing their Diablo-inspired approach through melodic black metal with a dark, atmospheric character and a strong connection between melody and aggression.
"Mount Arreat" presents a melodic form of black metal where prominent guitar melodies, driving drums and distinctive vocals shape the material. The Diablo themes are present throughout the lyrics, drawing from places and figures connected with the game, including Harrogath, Nihlathak, Baal and Tyrael. The production gives the guitars enough presence for the melodic side to remain central, while the vocals add a recognisable edge to the overall sound. There is a strong Scandinavian influence in the melodic writing, with touches that should appeal to listeners familiar with Dissection, Dark Tranquillity and early In Flames. "Mount Arreat" offers a focused and atmospheric black metal experience, with memorable melodic passages and a well-developed concept that remains central to the music.
