Formed in Umeå, Sweden in 1987, Meshuggah has spent decades reshaping extreme metal through complex polyrhythms, down tuned guitars, dissonant riffing and highly controlled rhythmic structures. Their early material grew from technical thrash, leading toward the approach heard on "Destroy Erase Improve", "Chaosphere", "Nothing", "Catch Thirtythree" and "obZen". Meshuggah has remained a distinct force within extreme metal, with a career built on intricate guitar work, unusual rhythmic patterns and an uncompromising musical direction.
Originally released in 1995, "Destroy Erase Improve" receives a new remaster for its 30th anniversary, preserving the original artwork while bringing a more contemporary presentation to the sound. The guitars, drums and vocals come through with greater separation, allowing the record's intricate rhythmic construction and dissonant guitar arrangements to register with more detail.
The production retains the character of a mid 1990s extreme metal release, while the remaster adds definition across the full mix. Lyrically, the album maintains the bleak and confrontational atmosphere associated with Meshuggah's early work, complementing the severe musical setting. This is a historically important release that remains musically demanding and highly individual decades after its original appearance.
