Meshuggah, formed in Umeå, Sweden in 1987, has become one of the most influential names in extreme and progressive metal. Across more than three decades, their music has been shaped by complex rhythmic structures, low tuned eight string guitars, dissonance and an intensely mechanical approach to songwriting. Albums such as "Destroy Erase Improve", "Chaosphere", "Nothing",
"Catch Thirtythree" and "obZen" helped establish a distinct musical language that later influenced a large part of modern progressive and djent metal. "Catch Thirtythree", originally released in 2005, remains one of their most experimental full length releases, built as a continuous composition divided into thirteen connected sections.
The 20th Anniversary Edition of "Catch Thirtythree" arrives through Reigning Phoenix Music as a remastered edition, bringing a sharper presentation to this highly repetitive and hypnotic material. The production remains cold, clinical and heavily focused on the interaction between the guitars, programmed drums and vocals, while the remaster adds more definition to the overall sound. The programmed drum approach gives the album an unusually rigid pulse, which fits the futuristic atmosphere of the music.
Lyrically, the album deals with themes of identity, psychological fragmentation and existential disorientation, adding another layer to its oppressive atmosphere. "Catch Thirtythree" is an extreme experiment in rhythm and repetition, one that requires patience and concentration from the listener. Its 47 minute span forms one long musical journey, with the individual sections functioning as parts of a much larger whole. This is a demanding Meshuggah release, but also one of their most distinctive.
