Stay Dead is a US sludge doom metal band founded by Christopher Borrelli, with vocalist Ryan Garney of High Desert Queen at the front. The lineup is completed by Rusty Miller on lead guitar, Blake Carrera on guitars and synths, and drummer Kenny Shillingburg. Borrelli’s background includes work with Eternal Hope Records, Fear The Victor, Split 50 and Chains Of Aggression, while the other members bring experience from projects such as High Desert Queen, Hollow Light, Unto Thee and Aiwass. Their debut, "Beneath The Weight Of Worlds", arrives via Ripple Music, with guest appearances from Troy Sanders of Mastodon, Matt Pike of High On Fire and Sleep, Eryka Fir of Coma Hole, and Aiwass.
"Beneath The Weight Of Worlds" is a six song release focused on sludge doom heaviness, dark atmosphere and a strong vocal presence. Ryan Garney shifts between restrained passages and harsher vocal intensity, while the guitars move through crushing riffs, psychedelic textures and melodic leads. Blake Carrera’s synth work adds an expansive, cinematic layer to the heavier sections, giving the album a broader sonic range.
The production places the vocals and guitars firmly at the center, with the rhythm section providing a heavy foundation throughout. "White Noise" features Troy Sanders, while "Electric Mistress" includes Matt Pike, adding two notable voices to the release. The inclusion of "Fever Dog", originally by Fu Manchu, closes the album with a different shade of heaviness. The result is a dark and weighty debut with enough variation to hold its six song format together, without relying on excess or unnecessary decoration.
