Pelegrin is a French heavy psychedelic rock trio based between Nantes and Paris, formed around François Roze on guitar and vocals, Antoine Ebel on drums and percussion, with Jason Recoing handling bass in the studio and Nacim Virieux performing live. The band released “Al-Mahruqa” in 2019 and “Ways Of Avicenna” in 2023, building a following through heavy riffs, extended psychedelic arrangements and Eastern musical influences. Their third album, “The Curse Of Nephtar”, arrives through Ripple Music, expanding their approach with heavier guitar work, stronger melodic hooks and a concept connecting ancient mythology with the consequences of fossil fuel exploitation.
Across seven tracks, “The Curse Of Nephtar” combines heavy psychedelic rock with progressive arrangements, Arabian influences and a dark conceptual storyline. “Sun And Blood” introduces the album’s heavier side, while “In The Company Of Stars” develops its atmospheric elements through shifting arrangements. The stretched compositions support the story of Nephtar, a supernatural entity whose promise of prosperity leads humanity towards destruction, drawing parallels with the political and social consequences of oil dependence.
Spoken word, sound design and lyrics contribute to the concept, although the extended arrangements occasionally take precedence over immediate impact. Recorded by Arthur Lauth at Brown Bear Recording, mixed by François Roze at Majortone and mastered by Kent Stump at Crystal Clear Sound, the production gives the guitars and percussion a prominent place while preserving the atmospheric details. “The Curse Of Nephtar” offers an ambitious blend of heavy psych, progressive rock and Middle Eastern influences, with the conceptual approach adding substance to the music across its roughly forty minute running time.
