Violation formed in Livermore, California, in the late 1970s, bringing together friends Paul Harris and Perry Fotos, later joined by bassist Brian Khoury and drummer Mike Pavlick. Initially performing covers by UFO, AC/DC, Thin Lizzy and Blue Öyster Cult, the band gradually developed original material and built a following across the Bay Area, sharing stages with Metallica, Mötley Crüe, Quiet Riot and Y&T. Their melodic approach earned attention through songs such as “Hot Fire” and “Coming After You”. In 1982, the band recorded additional material with Y&T drummer Leonard Haze, followed by an appearance on Shrapnel Records’ “U.S. Metal, Vol. 3”. Following lineup changes and the departure of vocalist Tim Hall, Violation disbanded in 1983, leaving behind recordings that never received a proper full length album release.
“The Anthology” gathers fifteen tracks, including alternate versions of “Balls Out”, “Goin Down Fighting” and “Gonna Get To You”, documenting the band’s blend of traditional heavy metal, hard rock riffs, melodic guitar solos and catchy vocal hooks. “Hot Fire” captures their preference for energetic songwriting, while “Coming After You” brings a more sentimental approach through its power ballad structure. The guitar work of Paul Harris provides much of the musical appeal, with melodic leads and accessible hooks recalling the late seventies and early eighties American hard rock scene.
The collection also includes “Meet Me At Midnight”, the single that helped the band gain attention beyond their local circuit. As an archival release, the compilation offers a useful account of a band whose career ended before a full album could establish its place in the era. The material has the songwriting instincts and melodic appeal associated with traditional heavy metal, although the collection format and alternate versions make the listening experience more historical document than unified album.
