Akantophis is a German black metal band formed in 1998, combining atmospheric dissonance, progressive structures and elements of death metal. Their early releases included “Galaria: Terra@ Exitus” in 2001 and “Live Im Klima”, before personal circumstances and involvement in other projects led to a hiatus in 2004. The band returned in 2017 with a revised lineup, followed by the “Wiederkehr” 7 inch in 2018 and “Exitus XX” in 2020. Their music explores the more experimental side of black metal, with a sound shaped by dark atmospheres, shifting arrangements and a distinctly dystopian outlook.

“Erneuerung” contains seven tracks running for around forty two minutes, with Akantophis combining aggressive black metal passages, dissonant guitar work and atmospheric sections across a varied collection of compositions. “Lobotomie” and “Perforation” represent the harsher side of the album, while “Horizont Aus Glas” develops its German language lyrics within the band’s bleak musical approach. The title track, “Renewal”, points towards the album’s central theme of personal and artistic transformation, while “#9010” adds another dimension to its unsettling atmosphere.

Recorded live at Liquid Aether Audio and mastered under the direction of Mario Dahmen, the production retains an organic quality that supports the changing dynamics of the performances. The predominantly German lyrics contribute to the album’s dark presentation, with the varied vocal and instrumental arrangements adding substance to its progressive approach. “Erneuerung” offers an intriguing combination of modern black metal, dissonance and atmospheric experimentation, although some of its extended arrangements could have benefited from more immediate songwriting.
