Leper Colony is a death metal band formed in 2020 through the long-standing friendship between German vocalist Marc Grewe, formerly of Morgoth and active with Insidious Disease and Asinhell, and Swedish multi-instrumentalist Rogga Johansson, known for his work with Paganizer, Ribspreader, and Revolting. Joined by British drummer Jon Rudin, the duo continues to explore the meeting point between the Swedish and Floridian schools of old-school death metal. Their third full-length, “Back To Primal Sludge”, follows “Leper Colony” (2023) and “Those Of The Morbid” (2025), with Testimony Records handling the release.
“Back To Primal Sludge” delivers nine tracks of old-school death metal driven by crushing guitar riffs, forceful drumming, and Grewe’s guttural vocals. The Swedish melodic edge and the heavier Florida influence combine into a straightforward attack, with the German thrash elements heard on the debut now largely absent. “Madness Is A Kingdom” and “These Blades” establish the album’s aggressive direction, while “Dead Soul Consortium” and “Beneath The Fat And Gristle” lean into the slower, grinding side of the band’s sound. The title track brings the album’s central approach into sharp view through its thick guitar tone and relentless rhythmic patterns.
Recorded by Rogga Johansson at The Rotpit, with vocals produced by Marc Wüstenhagen at Daily Hero Recording Studios and mastering by James Plotkin, the sound retains the rough edges expected from this style while giving the drums and guitars enough definition to maintain their impact. The songwriting stays close to established old-school death metal conventions, and the limited stylistic variation can make some tracks blend together. Nevertheless, the performances remain forceful, and the album offers a well-executed continuation of the band’s commitment to classic death metal.
